Carnival is one of the new maps released in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Resurgence Pack. Unlike the two 'legacy' maps in the pack, Carnival has been entirely built from scratch for use in online play. The map is set inside an abandoned carnival, with different themed areas to fight in.
OverviewCarnival is an additional map for adding to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 experience. Unlike the majority of maps in the online multiplayer mode, it is not an altered version of a map that is already present in the game. Carnival has been created from the ground up to be an entirely unique map. Judging by the scenery in the background, Carnival is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is confirmed by the presence of the massive "Christ the Redeemer" statue. As with all maps placed in the Brazil area, the two opposing factions are the Militia and Task Force 141. Unlike maps such as Karachi and Skidrow, there are many notable landmarks, which when in a pinch, can be called out to your team mates. Examples of these include Funhaus, which is arguably the most well known area in the map. Funhaus is a combination of both English and German, as "haus" is German for "house".
Inside the carnival are many clowns. Amusingly, all of the clowns have one arm, which may be a reference to Imran Zakhaev from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, owing to the fact he lost an arm during the mission "One Shot, One Kill". Carnival is split up into multiple different sections, and each section is laid out differently, meaning that different playstyles will be encountered when competing against other players. As expected, the map recycles some elements from other areas of the Call of Duty franchise: for example, the ferris wheel is copied from the mission "One Shot, One Kill" in Call of Duty 4, where you place MacMillan to hold off the attackers. The covered walkway is taken from Exodus, and the nearby highway appears to be from Underpass.
Inside Xbox and the "Stealth Clown"Before the release of the Resurgence map pack on the Xbox 360, 30 days before the Playstation 3 and PC releases after an agreement with Microsoft, an official Inside Xbox video appeared on the Dashboard. The actual release date of the video was the 24th of May 2010, though the maps released on the 3rd of June. In the video, Robert Bowling introduced the maps and generally set the scene for their impending release. During this time, he mentioned his favorite gameplay moment from the Resurgence map pack when it was being tested before release. The technique fourzerotwo described himself actually was christened the "Stealth Clown". Below is the full Inside Xbox video, with Robert Bowling's 'stealth clown' moment included. Skip to around 4:00 to see this moment, though playing from 3:55 will ensure it makes sense given the context.
Should you not wish to watch the video, see the image section below for a still of the 'stealth clown' technique being put into action by Robert Bowling during the game.
